The application and admission procedure is supported and processed by the members of the Academic Affairs Office at University of Graz. Personal consultation regarding the application and admission process will be carried out during the opening hours. Please read first of all the information on our website and use the Admission Guide!
If you need any help when entering your data for admission as a new student, please watch this video (a service provided by 4 students).
An admission to a doctorate programme is possible also outside of the admission period. However, not all Master-, Teacher Training- or Diploma degrees automatically entitle their holder to register for a doctoral programme at the University of Graz.
The curriculum of the intended doctoral programme provides information as to which previous programme is consecutive and therefore enables a direct admission. If you have any queries, please contact the Academic Affairs office.
For doctorate studies at the URBI, NAWI, THEOL faculty as well as for the interdisciplinary Doctorate School Teaching Methodology, an additional form with all required signatures has to be provided together with the application.
For further information please see here: https://studienabteilung.uni-graz.at/en/studying/admission-registration/doctoral-programmes/
Applicants who are already participating in courses at our university but who would like to begin a new programme or programmes are requested to come during the general admission period (all studies) or grace period (only Master and doctoral programmes) to the Academic Affairs Office and bring their student card with them.

Summary of the application procedure
In order to gain admission to doctoral studies, international candidates must submit an application for a place at the university. To do this, they must complete the application in full including all of the required original documents and then submit it either in person at the Admissions Office or by mail. Score/Record transcripts in English are accepted but need full diplomatic proof of authenticity.
Once the documents have been submitted, the Admissions Office will formally review and evaluate them. In the case of applications for doctoral studies, the faculty must also evaluate the documents in terms of content. It can take up to 8 weeks for the application to be processed. If a place at the university is granted, a notification will be sent to the mailing address on the application. If specific documents are missing or the application is incomplete, the university will send the applicant an official request to amend the application and the applicant will have the chance to submit additional documents (within the period prescribed). It is therefore recommended to submit applications as early as possible, so if an amendment is necessary, the applicant still has time to submit additional documents on time for the intended semester.
The application deadlines 5th of September and 5th of February are for Non-EU citizens only.
The medium of instruction at the University of Graz is German. Hence, candidates need to prove their German language knowledge on level C1. The Austrian Academic Exchange Service offers German language courses in Graz: https://studyinaustria.at/en/study/preparation-courses/
Doing a doctorate in English is possible at the Faculty of Natural Sciences (all disciplines), at the Faculty of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences (doctoral studies in Geography and doctoral studies in Environmental System Sciences), at the School of Business, Economics and Social Sciences, and at the Faculty of Humanities (doctoral studies in English and American Studies).
