Doctoral candidates are early stage researchers in the first phase of an academic career. Therefore, at the core of doctoral studies lies the production of scientific knowledge via original research. In order to also enhance and broaden their future prospects beyond the boundaries of Academia doctoral candidates should gain general, non-disciplinary transferable skills in addition to their research-related skills.
Sufficient financial funding for doctoral candidates allows for mainly focusing on the dissertational process and may also support the candidates’ further involvement into the activities of the scientific community (i.e. publications, presentations, teaching).
