Admission-Registration

Admission to doctoral studies takes place at the Department Academic Affairs. Basically this is possible all year round. However, not every master's degree, teaching degree or diploma program automatically entitles the student to take up a doctoral program. The curriculum of the intended doctoral program will tell you which consecutive (=directly continuing) previous studies entitle you to admission.

Applicants who are already studying at the University of Graz, but who want to open another study need to come to the Department of Academic Affairs with their student ID during the general admission period or additional period (only for Master's and Doctoral studies).

1) If you have completed a study at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz and this qualifies you for further doctoral studies, you can enroll by e-mail.

Send the following documents by e-mail:

  • Your wish for enrollment with exact details of the doctoral program you wish to pursue (faculty and specialization)
  • your matriculation number
  • if required for your faculty Preliminary agreement with all required signatures
  • For the following faculties, the signed form Preliminary Agreement or Registration for Doctoral Studies must be submitted:
URBI THEOL
NAWI überfakultäres Doktorat Fachdidaktik

If you have completed your pre-studies at another Austrian educational institution, your original documents are required for the first-time enrollment. Appointments can be made at zulassung.doktorat(at)uni-graz.at or +43(0)316 380-1163.

2) If your previous studies completed in Austria do NOT entitle you to direct admission to the doctoral program, you must submit an application for admission.

The application must include:

  • Proof of completed studies (e.g. award notice, sponsorship notice, diploma)
  • Proof of examinations taken (e.g. proof of success, transcript of records, collective certificate, diploma supplement, list of examinations as well as contents of examinations)
  • Summary of the thesis (e.g. abstract)

Depending on the faculty, the following must also be attached to the application:

  • Doctorate URBI: Form "Vorabeinigung" of the corresponding doctoral school (not available online).
  • Doctorate NAWI: form "Registration for doctoral studies" & abstract of the planned dissertation
  • Doctorate in didactics: form "Preliminary agreement
  • Doctorate SOWI: Table of contents and bibliography of the diploma or master thesis and if "elective subject" is indicated in the transcript: Certificate of title and type of course
  • Doctorate of the Faculty of Catholic Theology: Form "Vorabeinigung"

You can submit the application together with the required application by mail. In case of admission, the original documents must be submitted at the time of enrollment.

Information on the further procedure can be found on the page of the Department of Academic Affairs.
